Mumbai Blast Suspect Retracts Confession

Qasab?

Qasab?

India is known for its extra-legal procedures for obtaining confessions that are then presented literally as God’s word in court and the media.

Mohammad Ajmal Amir Qasab, the prime suspect in last November’s bombing in Mumbai, had confessed to his involvement. Now, he has retracted his previous statement, claiming he was tortured.

This may just be another of Qasab’s flip-flops thus far or he may be right. The question in my mind is why haven’t we seen a more recent photograph of Qasab. The only one available is the one on the left and that may or may not be the real Qasab.

Will the real Ajmal Qasab please stand up?

The Book Banning Phenomena

Gujarat, a western Indian state, has banned a book, merely because the author praised Muhammad Ali Jinnah, the so-called founder of Pakistan, and criticized Vallabbhai Patel, a Hindu nationalist leader. This is the same place that just re-elected a genocidal maniac as its Chief Minister.

Freedom of speech ought to be a cherished ideal of any pluralistic democracy. Banning books goes against the very principles of democracy.

Intolerance in Indian Politics: Praise a Pakistani Leader; Get Expelled From Your Party

Former Minister; Now Persona Non Grata

Former Minister; Now Persona Non Grata

The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), a right wing Hindu nationalist party in India, just cannot get over the fact that Jaswant Singh wrote a book praising Muhammad Ali Jinnah, a freedom fighter and first President of Pakistan.

It had to go and expel Singh from the BJP. Despite the fact that Singh has been a party stalwart for well over 30 years; he is a founding member; he has served as a cabinet minister in all BJP central governments till date.

This is the kind of democracy we have in India. Praise somebody, criticize your party, write a book and you’re on your way out.

North Korean Nuclear Materials Being Peddled on Indian Streets (Already)

Indian scientists and police searching a North Korean ship detained near the Andaman and Nicobar islands have not found any nuclear materials aboard, according to a home ministry spokesman.

The vessel, MV Mu San, dropped anchor without permission on Wednesday, but attempted to flee when contacted by the Indian coastguard. The ship was later  detained after a chase and escorted to Port Blair, the capital of the islands.

“We have been checking the ship for any radioactive material, but I must say we have found nothing like that so far,” senior Andaman police official Ashok Chand said. “But we will continue checking it until we are satisfied there is nothing wrong with the consignment.”

Meanwhile, your correspondent was able to get quotes on several North Korea-made nuclear weapon components and raw materials, and other weaponry, at a street market in Port Blair.

The market is awash with illicit armaments that have been brought ashore since Wednesday, according to a street peddler selling Chinese-made hand grenades.

“We buy weapons from police. Big cargo come Korea,” he said. “Very cheap – 10 grenades for 100 Rupees. China grenades. No like? Plutonium – only 1000 Rupees a kilo. Special price for you. Special price. Ok, only 900 Rupees a kilo just for you. Very good price. No beat.”

Hillary Visits India; Distressed by Use of Male Honorific

Confusing 'Em Indians

Confusing 'Em Indians

US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton is visiting New Delhi on her official visit to India, to energize Indo-American relations at a time economic and geopolitical challenges lie ahead of the two allies.

But, Ms. Clinton is perturbed by the constant use of the male honorific by Indian officials, of both gender. Her protocol officer has pointed out the mistake to his Indian counter-part, but Clinton’s hosts continue to address her as Mr. Clinton, Mr. Secretary, Sir, and so on.

“She is not too happy being addressed as Mr. Clinton. She is proud of her femininity and cannot understand why even Prime Minister Singh calls her Mr. Secretary,” said a spokesman of the State Department. “But she is more than happy to forgive and forget, in the spirit of our President Barack Obama.” Read on »

The Butcher of Gujarat to be Interviewed After 7 Years?

Narendra Modi, the infamous Chief Minister of Gujarat, has had a full 7 years of near complete immunity and full reign over his state in India despite overseeing a near holocaust of Muslims in 2002. With his implicit, and sometimes explicit permission, Hindu nationalists slaughtered, raped and displaced Muslim men, women and children.

Official figures put the death toll at 2000 in total with another 250 missing. Actual numbers must be much higher – probably closer to 10,000. Over 100,000 people, both Hindus and Muslims, were displaced when Modi’s crazed followers destroyed entire neighborhoods and cities. It has even been called a genocide by some in the Indian media. Tehelka has the full report. Read on »

Making sense of the Indian elections

I was waiting till the Congress actually formed the government to comment on the recent elections in India. Apparently, the INC has the support of 322 members of parliament to form the government, well over the requirement of 274 out of 527. Manmohan Singh will remain as Prime Minister, shockingly the first PM to get re-elected since Nehru way back when! Even the iconic Indira Gandhi, Nehru’s daughter, didn’t manage to win 2 elections in a row.

Let’s take a closer look at the results, courtesy Times of India: Read on »
