Chinese States of America?

We all know about the Chinese buying up American Treasury bonds, and investing in a limited number of large companies, such as Morgan Stanley and Blackstone.

Now, the Chinese government investment funds are buying up minor stakes in several companies including Coke, Apple, Visa, Goodyear and others.

How much longer till the Chinese own us outright, eh?

Plague + Swine Flu Scourge the Chinese

In addition to the swine flu that’s still causing concern for health officials in China, we now have another unpleasant addition to the scene - plague:

Thousands of people have been placed in quarantine in north-western China after a man died of pneumonic plague.

Chinese authorities say the man who died was a 32-year-old herdsman from a sparsely populated area mostly inhabited by Tibetans.

Most of the other 11 people infected with the disease are relatives of the dead man.

This is the first case of plague that comes to mind since the ‘94 outbreak in western India.

This episode also points to the terrible health and sanitation conditions in western China, especially in Tibetan and Uyghur areas.

China Admits to Uyghur Killings

China has finally admitted that its security forces did indeed kill rioters, including Uyghurs, in the recent clashes in western China:

The rioters, the criminals, continued to act in an extremely vicious manner, insisted on having their way, and continued to threaten the lives of others…

It was at this point that our public security forces and military police decisively fired. They shot dead 12 rioters. Of them, three died on site, and nine died as people tried to save them.

An admission of fault by the Chinese authorities calls for a toast!

Rioting’s still going in Urumqi and elsewhere in that Western China region.

Free Xinjiang! Let’s see this bumper sticker on your Subarus.

The Hypocrisy of the Free Tibet Crowd vis-a-vis Xinjiang

Historically, Sinkiang has been at war with the Eastern Chinese. They have identified more with Central Asia than with its current occupier.

The region first supported the Turks, then the Mongols against the Chinese. During the civil war, a separate independent entity existed that was opposed to both the Communists and Nationalists. China didn’t really bring the region under its control until after 1949. Even then, there was more support for Soviet Union than for China. East Turkestan; not Western China. Read on »
