US: Kill Al-Awlaki; CIA: Um, Sure, If We Can Find Him

Laughing at the US

Laughing at the US

The US has given the CIA the go-ahead to capture or kill terrorist ring-leader Anwar Al-Awlaki, a US-citizen based out of Yemen.

Imam Anwar Al-Awlaki, erstwhile of New Mexico, really doesn’t have anything to worry about. It’s been almost 9 years since we decided to take out Osama Bin Laden, and he’s still free to do whatever the heck he wants whenever he wants to.

If US forces can’t take out the number one enemy of the state and the world’s most dangerous terrorist, what kind of success can we expect with a guy with a much lower profile?

Revolution in Kyrgyzstan: Color Yet Undecided

Kyrgyz Flag

Kyrgyz Flag

The latest Central Asian country to jump on the public protests/revolution/popular coup bandwagon is Kyrgyzstan, where protestors have stormed and/or taken control of several key buildings int he capital, Bishkek.

The West’s quandary, however, is quite intense but on a rather mundane issue. What color are we going to assign to this revolution? The Red Revolution is already taken (China, Russia). Yellow might be too (Burma).

Or, are we going to get creative? The Cyan Revolution? The Sapphire Revolution? The Beige Revolution? The Magenta Revolution? The Aureolin Revolution? The Cerulean Revolution?

I, for one, vote for the Ecru Revolution.

UPDATE: The Ecru Revolution has succeeded in toppling the government. President Kurmanbek Bakiyev has fled.

iPad: The All Powerful All-Device Killer

iPad: The All-Device Killer

iPad: The All-Device Killer

Apple fanboys will praise each and everything the company does, whether it be the new iPhone or its insane restrictions on third-party applications on its devices. Every time the company comes out with a device, dire predictions are made about every other device and Wall Street rewards AAPL with huge increases.

With the new iPad, the same cycle is repeating itself. Now, iPad is an awesome device in itself – the Apple Newton from the mid-’90s had tried something along its lines but the timing was wrong back then. And, the predictions this time around are:

1) The iPad will kill the netbook; 2) The iPad will not kill the laptop dead, but it will seriously wound its mass appeal; 3) The iPad will also kill or seriously cannibalize sales of the iPod Touch; and 4) The iPad could even cut into iPhone, BlackBerry, and Droid sales.

All hail the iPad and surrender to the power of Steve Jobs.

UPDATE: Several problems with the iPad are surfacing, most importantly its wi-fi issues and the same-old same-old gripe with applications.

Comcast Triumphs Over FCC/Internet Freedom

FCCvComcast

Freedom should win

The FCC has been trying to regulate ISPs for several years now, and recently released the “National Broadband Plan”, with far reaching implications for the ISP industry. The FCC has also been pushing for Net Neutrality, which was the basis for the lawsuit filed by Comcast against the agency. A federal court has now ruled that the FCC lacks the authority to enforce Net Neutrality.

Net Neutrality is an essential principle that needs to be enforced upon all ISPs. Why? Because companies like Comcast will otherwise restrict our access to the internet (and thus information) and charge us for data intensive services such as data and video streaming which have become almost a necessity these days. It is really a bipartisan issue – it is really a question of freedom over the internet.

The FCC should have the authority to regulate broadband providers and enforce rules such as Net Neutrality, simply because we don’t need more bureaucracy to deal with this issue. It is hard to argue that internet usage, which includes email, chat, etc., doesn’t fall under “communications” and, if the current FCC charter doesn’t include this, the Congress needs to pass a law to make it happen.

Understandably, Comcast is trying its best to maximize profits by imposing as many fees as possible, which will undoubtedly happen if Net Neutrality fails, and regulations need to prevent such blatant greed.

Does Wall Street Need More Women Like Erin Callan?

Shoes or Competence?

High heels or competence?

William Cohan opines on the need of more woman and more estrogen on Wall Street. Gender equality on Wall Street is definitely needed given the huge female deficit in the finance world.

But, do we need more incompetent women like Erin Callan (#1 and #2), the CFO of Lehman Brothers right before its downfall, who was ostensibly promoted to positions of power based on her gender rather than her qualifications?

Serbia Apologizes for Srebrenica

Could this have been prevented?

Could this have been prevented?

Unlike the Mounties’ apology for the taser death of a sick man, the Serbian parliament’s acknowledgment of the 1995 Srebrenica massacre and how it could have done more to prevent it is a step in the right direction.

The Serbians have long denied the massacre of Bosnian Muslims in 1995, with some MPs going so far as to claim that the if the murders did take place, the Bosnians were responsible for it. The current resolution reads:

The parliament of Serbia strongly condemns the crime committed against the Bosnian Muslim population of Srebrenica in July 1995 … condolences and an apology to the families of the victims because not everything was done to prevent the tragedy

The pro-Western government pushed this through parliament to appease the EU, and hopefully jump-start its membership process. The motivations, therefore, weren’t very noble, but its a start nonetheless.

Mounties Taser Man to Death and Then … Apologize

That’s what murderers would like to do too … kill someone, then apologize and get away with it.
