Another Cartoon Brouhaha

Aussies have been angered by a cartoon in an Indian newspaper depicting their police officers as (racist) KKK members not interested in solving the murder of an Indian student in Melbourne, one of many recent anti-Indian attacks in several parts of Australia.

If this heinous crime were committed against a White Australian, we wouldn’t even have heard about it. But, since it was an Indian student, we have an international brouhaha on our hands. Given the recent problems (see this) involving foreign students in Australia, however, racism might have had a little bit to do with the crime. More likely, the case is as a police officer describes it to be:

[Indian students] travel home at night on public transport from part-time jobs, and carry valuables such as laptops.

The Australian government has several tools at its disposal to deal with the situation – one of which involves finding those at fault and making an example out of them.
