The 2010 Senate Race in WA

One Republican operative put it last year, “Patty Murray is an institution in Washington state. It would be next to impossible to defeat her.” But there will always be Republicans vying to run against her, and one is already trying to get a foot in the door.

Dr. Sean Salazar, so far unrelated to the Colorado political family of the same name, of Montlake Terrace has put together a campaign already. According to his bio online:

Dr. Sean Salazar brings a fresh approach to serving the citizens of Washington State.  His desire to bring change arises from his growth from a humble background into his current occupation.  Having run for Congress once before, Sean understands the practicality of campaigns and politics.  Being a Chiropractic Doctor, he also understands the needs to deliver quality and affordable healthcare.  His background as a military veteran with overseas service provides a perspective of national security coupled with quality education.

As one of five children raised by a single mother and growing up in several of Seattle’s low income
housing projects, Sean experienced some of the problems associated with living in the inner city.  It was during those formative years that Sean developed an understanding of the needs of Americans living under challenging circumstances.

After graduation from Seattle’s Cleveland High School, Sean enlisted in the Navy where he served in Japan and the Persian Gulf.  Following his discharge from the Navy, he enrolled at Patton College, starting his undergraduate work toward a Doctor of Chiropractic degree from Palmer West.  Sean became a licensed Chiropractor in 1999.

Sean subsequently began his practice in the San Diego area where he also served on the staff of the San Diego Riptide arena football team. He later worked with the St. Louis Rams NFL football team, specializing in Chiropractic and sports rehab.

During his tenure in California, Sean ventured into politics when he ran for the U.S. Congress in 2001.

Desiring to be closer to his family, Sean moved back to the Puget Sound.  He currently practices at his Chiropractic sports rehab clinic in Edmonds, Washington.  As a Doctor of Chiropractic, Sean understands the need to deliver quality and affordable healthcare for all.

He currently lives in Mountlake Terrace with his wife, Jasmin.  She is employed with the Port of Seattle and is a Persian Gulf Army Veteran who is active in Hispanic affairs.

All well and good, but, if you cut through the standard political mumbo-jumbo, Mr. Salazar doesn’t have much experience to take on Murray. He has run for Congress and is active in Republican politics. So have so many others in our state.

He has a military background, but that didn’t help Doug Roulstone from losing heavily in the 2nd Congressional. He’s a Chiropractor, but that doesn’t bring in much influence, unfortunately.

According to his campaign staffers, he’s a staunch conservative, not a “RINO” and is a family man. Well, that might help in the primary.

Let’s take a look at a recent mail sent out by the campaign earlier last week:

Not too professional, I must say. The website isn’t too professional looking either.

As for Republican consultants, Washington state has the same limited number of folks who have lost every statewide election since 2000 – Gorton, Nethercutt, McGavick and Rossi x 2. The same people will probably jump on the front-runner’s bandwagon and we will have the same losing strategy once again.

At this point of time, it doesn’t look look too promising, but with many months left for the actual contest to begin, it might be too early to write off any candidate.

I hope Mr. Salazar can prevail over that abomination Murray, but it will require some creative thinking.

As far as experience, Patty Murray ran as “A soccer mom in Tennis Shoes”. What experience did she have? Now she is a puppet of The present administration and has been a rubber stamp for the Democratic Party. She is not an independent thinker she just goes along with the party line.
