DDoS Attacks Against tGO
12:18 pm, March 10th, 2010 : Miscellaneous
The server that hosts the Global Observatory has been under distributed-denial-of-service (DDoS) attacks since around noon Monday, which explains why the site has either been down entirely or extremely slow over the past couple of days.
Last night, we undertook certain measures to mitigate the effects of the DDoS attacks, but the server is still under extreme strain. The site is presently up and running, but painfully slow at times. The last 2 articles were supposed to posted earlier yesterday but are only showing up today.
The next couple of days will show whether DDoS attacks have been circumvented by our current measures or if we have to do anything else.

Lake Placid 3D Live in Maine Right Now
11:42 am, March 10th, 2010 : Miscellaneous

Gotta Dodge This Viper
If you cared at all for the original Lake Placid, there’s a sequel going on right now in Maine. Some tool released his pet Gaboon viper on a trail in Maine. The viper is perhaps one of the most venomous snakes in the world, although not very aggressive.
Owning such a dangerous animal is already illegal in Maine. The guy who released the snake in a public place should be given first hand experience of its fangs and poison – that’ll teach him.

Porn Domain Should Be Approved
12:12 am, March 10th, 2010 : Media

Love on the net
The ICANN board is again considering approving the dot.xxx domain name for adult websites. The last time, the idea was dropped because American conservative groups nixed it. Now, what should be done in addition to approving the porn domain is enabling parental control filtering by domain extensions, and adult websites should be required to move to the new domain.
Online sex and porn addiction is an epidemic that has not spared our kids. Currently, it is virtually impossible to filter all adult content. All we can do is block individual sites or use the voluntary ICRA rating system. The former is inefficient as there are literally millions of sites that can be found using your friendly neighborhood google or bing. The latter is strictly voluntary and very few sites adhere to it. There are the usual “Over 18″ warnings but those easy enough to fake.
An internet porn domain, along with the necessary reforms to restrict adult content to it, should be something conservatives should wholeheartedly support.
Obama = Bush, Says the ACLU
2:25 pm, March 7th, 2010 : White House
Obama’s latest move to try KSM in military tribunals, instead of criminal courts, is infuriating the left to such an extent that the ACLU published the following full-page ad in the NYT.

Obama is slowly coming to the painful realization that a lot of what the Bush administration did in matters of national security (military tribunals, Gitmo, etc.) was due to expediency given the tough circumstances, rather than a hatred for constitutional rights and freedoms. The left can’t help feel betrayed by its poster boy.
Young ‘Uns Still Obsessed with Obama
12:12 pm, March 6th, 2010 : White House
It seems that the 18-29 crowd can’t get over its obsession with Barack Obama. While approval ratings from other age groups are somewhat consistent with previous presidencies, 66% of young ‘uns still like Obama, according to a recent Gallup poll.

They’re still gulping down the Kool-Aid by the gallons. This despite the fact that unemployment and underemployment account for a fifth of the labor force more than a year since BHO took office.
2 More Gay Sex Scandal Involving “Conservatives”
11:57 pm, March 4th, 2010 : Gay Marriage

The Republican and the Catholic
The Catholic Church has hardly been able to stay out of sex scandals and the GOP is racing to keep up.
This time around, a senior member of the Pope’s inner circle and an important adviser to the Vatican was caught engaging in homosexual activities, including haggling with a choir boy “over the specific physical details of men he wanted brought to him.” This guy is also accused of corruption.
Across the Atlantic, a Republican legislator in California, an anti-gay crusader, was arrested for a DUI shortly after leaving a gay club.
If they enjoy their indulgences, that’s their business. They should, however, stop pretending to be all pious and righteous.
The Armenian Genocide: Get Over It!
6:51 pm, March 4th, 2010 : Middle East, Politics
The Foreign Relations Committee of the U.S. Senate voted today to classify the 1915 massacre of Armenians by the Ottomans as genocide, despite strenuous objections from the White House. The result? Turkey has immediately withdrawn its ambassador to Washington.
At a time when American relations are already strained with Middle Eastern nations and with the Muslim world in general, it hardly makes any sense to rile up the only Muslim democracy in the region and a long-time U.S. ally.
From the perspective of U.S. interests in the region, Armenia hardly provides any benefit at all. Read on »
Pervez Musharraf Speaking in Bellevue Amidst Protests (and Hypocrisy)
1:20 pm, March 3rd, 2010 : Asia

Mushy
Pervez Musharraf, the former President of Pakistan who now earns six to seven figures for his lectures, is coming to Bellevue, Washington, on March 14th.
The organization that is sponsoring him claims:
We are a local chapter in Seattle, Washington; consisting of local Ex-Pat Pakistanis who support the democratic institutions within Pakistan by offering our help in several areas that will promote the on going transition that has been occuring in Pakistan for a few years now.
We are an apolitical organization that is committed to support any leader or personality from Pakistan belonging to any political party (or not) who is genuinely committed to help flourish and promote democratic values in the country.
Musharraf, of course, is the very embodiment of democracy. This is the man who toppled a democratically elected government and stalled democratic reforms for many years in the name of national security, but, he was doing it all merely to promote “democratic values.”

Floundering Ole Miss Recruits Star Wars’ Admiral Ackbar
5:37 pm, March 2nd, 2010 : Miscellaneous

Ackbar
The University of Mississippi, a tier-3 university according to U.S. News & World Report and not rising up, lost its old mascot, Colonel Reb, in 2006 when the administration discontinued it because of its perceived racist image.
Students at Ole Miss have now decided to recruit Admiral Ackbar to help them with their image issues. They have even set up a sophomoric website to support their cause.
Ackbar is a fictional character from Geoge Lucas’ renowned series and his most famous, and perhaps the only, lines in the Star Wars: Return of the Jedi were the following:
Lando Calrissian: Break off the attack! The shield is still up!
Wedge Antilles: I get no reading. Are you sure?
Lando Calrissian: Pull up! All craft, pull up!
Admiral Ackbar: Take evasive action! Green group, stick close to holding section MV-7!
Mon Calamari: Admiral! We have enemy ships in sector 47!
Admiral Ackbar: It’s a trap!
Apparently, he’s good at detecting traps. Perhaps the students want to warn prospies … Don’t enroll at Ole Mis, it’s a trap to take away your money and graduate you still uneducated!

Polar Bears: Children of Global Warming
11:36 pm, March 1st, 2010 : Global Warming

He's done it before
So, global warming might actually have led to the evolution of polar bears. And, apparently:
…polar bears have already survived a global warming that affected the northern hemisphere from 130,000 to 115,000 years ago, when the Greenland ice sheet and the Arctic ice cap were smaller than now.
Global warming zombies, however, had to spin the story:
Professor Chris Stringer, of the Natural History Museum in London, said: ‘Living through a warm period back then does not mean polar bears are resilient to climate change now.’
Right.
Farrakhan: America Is Doomed
11:25 pm, March 1st, 2010 : Americas

Blame it on the Jews
Of all the crazy people in the world, perhaps the worst is somebody like Louis Farrakhan who still commands a following in the Nation of Islam. Of course, without Farrakhan, we’d one have less comedian in the world.
It’s not an accident that a great earthquake took place in Chile … It was a precipitate of what I have to tell you today of what’s coming to America. You will not escape.
I will speak to the kings and rulers of the world. I will speak to the pope and the religious leaders because you have to know that your time has come … I desire to guide you and warn you of things that are coming that you must try to prepare yourselves for because we are absolutely living in the change of worlds.
He blamed everything else on the Jews.
And, Farrakhan would know. He must’ve heard it from Yakub straight outta Patmos.
Palestinian Settlements: One Way Forward
1:11 am, February 28th, 2010 : Israel/Palestine, Middle East

Rawabi
The West Bank has long been one of the poorest regions of the world, with high unemployment, lack of modern amenities and housing, and one of the worst standards of living.
That might change for some 40,000 Palestinians if the Palestinian development firm Massar, with money from a Qatari investment company, has its way in Rawabi. A Western-style planned settlement is being built there with parks, quality residential buildings and a commercial center.
The only remaining issues are the lack of Israeli support, in the form of the necessary permits to build the access roads, and the quite unaffordable house prices.
While supposedly “affordable mortgages” will be made available, the average Palestinian who earns about 20 dollars a day can hardly buy a house that costs $50,000. For true progress, it would make a little more sense for Qatar, or any of the super wealthy Muslim Arab states, to subsidize the housing project. A five thousand home would be within the reach for more Palestinians.
More developments like Rawabi, even with its problems, will help ameliorate the conditions in the West Bank, and move us further along the road to peace.
McCain/Dorgan Don’t Like Dietary Supplements
2:01 pm, February 26th, 2010 : Health
Proving even further that John McCain is hardly a Republican advocating more and more government intrusion into the private lives of citizens and restricting personal choice, he (along with Byron Dorgan) has introduced another crappy bill restricting access to dietary supplements, claiming:
All Americans should know the exact ingredients of any dietary supplement they use and the FDA must have the tools necessary to ensure the safety of dietary supplements.
This legislation would require dietary supplement manufactures to register with the FDA and fully disclose the ingredients contained in the supplement. Surveys have found that a majority of dietary supplement users believe the FDA approves the safety of dietary supplements prior to market introduction. However, that is not the case. In fact, dietary supplement manufacturers’ advertised claims of safety and effectiveness are not reviewed or approved by the FDA.
The FDA has hardly proved itself capable of preventing life threatening and other gravely harmful drugs from being approved, including Vioxx and many others. MSN has nice section on the FDA hall of shame. Now, McCain wants the FDA to take control of dietary supplements.
If the FDA can’t do its job now, relatively limited as it is, how the heck can we expect it to do any better with more on its plate?
Hank Paulson: We Couldn’t Find Anything (More To Do)
12:14 am, February 24th, 2010 : Economy
In a recent interview for the Dartmouth Alumni Magazine, Hank Paulson ‘68, the former Treasury Secretary, claims in reference to the Lehman Brothers collapse:
We tried very hard, but we didn’t have the authority to put capital into Lehman Brothers until we got TARP. Even if the Fed could have found a legal way to make a loan, it would have been foolhardy because it would have been lending into a run – Lehman Brothers had a big capital hole and a liquidity problem, and we didn’t have a buyer for them as we did with Bear Stearns…
[So there's nothing that could have been done?]
Yeah. We couldn’t find anything
That was for the weekend of September 13-14, 2008. The result? A complete freeze-up of the lending market and a massive tumble in U.S. and global stocks. Two days later on September 16, the U.S. government took over AIG with a $85 billion bailout.

Who Cares About Lehman?
Of course, there are many excuses to be made for allowing the Lehman collapse (free market!) and saving AIG (too big!), but how did the U.S. government suddenly acquire the authority to bailout an insurance company 2 days after it couldn’t save an important investment bank?
Arguably, the Lehman collapse was the spark that caused the fire. Once you save one company as insignificant as Bear Stearns, you can’t allow another as big as Lehman to collapse in the midst of a jittery economy.
Paulson and C0. are responsible for the horrible TARP program – not because it was put in place but because of the way it was implemented – and the initial Wall Street collapse. Paulson did try his best to prevent another Lehman, but it was too late already.
Monogamous Frogs: Unacceptable!
12:08 am, February 23rd, 2010 : Gay Marriage

Save Us From Straight Frogs!
Over the past several years, scientists have been trying their best to portray homosexuality as normal by displaying supposed gay traits in animals.
We have now discovered a species of poison frogs that are not only monogamous but also, God forbid, straight. This is just wrong!
These frogs are entirely abnormal and should be eradicated, or turned gay.
Brown’s First Vote: Crossing the Aisle

Forward Looking?
Scott Brown, the GOP’s savior, has crossed the aisle to join Democrats in passing another wasteful bill that is allegedly meant to create jobs – wasn’t the $800 billion stimulus plan supposed to do the same? If 800 billion dollars couldn’t save the day, what will a mere $15 billion do?
The more important question in my mind is whether Brown will return to his conservative roots after this anomaly (much like justices Samuel Alito and John Roberts) or will he become another Snowe/Collins clone?
Or, perhaps, he’s just voting with an eye to 2012 when he’s going to be on the ballot again.
Brutal Brooklyn Cop Off The Hook
12:34 pm, February 22nd, 2010 : Miscellaneous

Kern: He Looks Brutal
The jury in the case of plaintiff Michael Mineo found the police officers innocent of the sodomy charges, with a police baton no less, brought against them.
The officer accused of the crime, Richard Kern, has been accused of excessive force before. In 2007, the city settled with 2 men for $50,000.
In this case, a fellow cop, Kevin Maloney, went against his colleagues to testify that he saw Kern violate Mineo.
But the jury wasn’t allowed to take the first matter into consideration, despite the reality that Kern’s prior record of brutality has a direct connection with the case at hand. And, despite the fact that Maloney risked his career by snitching, the jury still acquitted Kern and his 2 accomplices.
No wonder, the American judicial system is considered a joke. On the one hand, convicted murderers are dying of old age on death row, and, on the other, brutal cops are getting away with anything they want.
Obama’s Failing Climate Change Movement
10:52 pm, February 19th, 2010 : White House
The Economist’s KAL seldom criticizes liberals. When he does, it’s generally for inaction on any number of his favorite (and invariably, lefty) issues. The latest is climate change.
No wonder Obama’s approval ratings are falling. He isn’t pleasing anyone on his core issues – health care, climate change, ending the wars, Gitmo – and has been relegated to secondary issues, such as gays in the military and banning proprietary trading by banks.

Mahmoud al-Mabhouh: Finally A Fun Assassination
10:40 pm, February 19th, 2010 : Israel/Palestine, Middle East
The end of the Cold War also brought about the sad end of interesting assassinations. No more would we hear about the murder of high profile politicians, businessmen and other individuals on a regular basis. Over the past 20 years, only a few such covert attempts have been made and only a very few of those have been as interesting as this latest one.
Mahmoud Al-Mabhouh, the founder of Hamas’ military wing was recently assassinated in Dubai, purportedly by Mossad agents. Almost a month after the murder, the gory details are finally coming out, including CCTV footage (below) of the events leading upto and after the killing.
Although it seems that Israel was probably involved in the killing, Al-Mabhouh should have been dispatched off to hell a long time back.
Craigslist: Quite Possibly the Best Post Ever
1:14 pm, February 18th, 2010 : Miscellaneous
Sometimes, Craigslist can be more than entertaining, as evidenced by this post:
Are you intimidated by winter driving? What the hell are you doing up here then? Do you know where you are? This isn’t the fucking jungle or desert.
You inevitably pull out in front of me when there’s no one behind me, and you could’ve waited another 15 seconds to not make anyone slam on their brakes on ice and snow. You then continue to drive really slow, say less than half the speed limit. No one in their right mind would pass someone on roads with a 2 ft snow drift in the median during a snow storm. So, I’m stuck behind you until you pull into whatever casino, bingo hall, party, or wherever you’re headed that’s OK be late to. Yes, I realize that driving on slippery roads and in low visibility can be scary, so I appreciate you driving within your limits. However, don’t pull out in front of a car when you know you’re not going to at least go the speed limit! Just wait another 30 seconds maybe (since you obviously aren’t in a hurry anyway), and you won’t ruin someone elses’ day. Also, when you see a line of cars 30-50 deep trapped behind you, you don’t have to speed up, no, but you SHOULD pull over to let some by. You’re obviously doing a really shitty job of setting the pace on this “not-safe-for-passing” road. Do us ALL a favor and let us get to our families, jobs, and real obligations, and pull the fuck over for fuck’s sake! It’s a common courtesy. If the shoulder has been replaced by a 14 ft wall of plowed snow (as we all know happens up here), find a decently plowed side road to pull on to for a minute. Don’t be surprised or offended when you get 25 middle fingers and 37 horns out of the 50 cars you fucked for the last hour and a half that are now passing you.
Here are some tips for you that will make both of our lives easier:
1. Your winter driving confidence will grow 10 fold if you get rid of that 1994 Buick front wheel drive and get something with all wheel drive. You don’t need a huge truck or SUV, but just something that actually gets some traction. Try a used Subaru. They’re all wheel drive, cheap, and fuel efficient.
2. Go practice in an empty parking lot, and see what exactly your limits are and those of your vehicle. You won’t get arrested for sliding around an empty parking lot Sunday evening outside of town.
3. You don’t want to give up your front wheel drive Buick? Get some snow tires! At least for the front two wheels, but better yet all of your wheels could use them. You will be amazed at what a good set of snow tires actually do for your driving and confidence. There’s a reason why they’re popular up here.
4. Wait until the last car passes before pulling on to the road. See above. Shit!
5. Stay the fuck home! Visibility to low? Too windy? Icy roads? Then don’t drive to the casino to lose another $200 bucks out of your $300 paycheck and jeopardize the roads for the rest of us. Stay home and watch game shows and beat your wife/husband/dog or whatever you sleep with at night.
6. Don’t like option #5? Take a cab! Believe it or not, these guys are good at winter driving. They do this for a living and they’re really quite nice people. Besides, the cab ride to the casino or bingo hall will only cost a fraction of what you’ll lose once you get there. Plus you save the embarrassment of getting flipped off by grandma in the Ford Expedition while passing you.
7. Move to the South. I bet you’d fit in there anyway. Not sure what their casino scene is like, but you’ll find some other unintelligent way to lose money. You can keep your Buick, too!
I realize the people who are actually the offenders are probably not going to read this, at least not many of them. First you have to get a computer. Then resist the urge to pawn it for casino money. If you know any of these assholes, tell them what you think about following them at 20 mph on Highway 41 or M28 for two goddamn hours. Thanks!
I’ll see you on the road!
More Nuclear Power in the U.S.: Finally!
12:39 am, February 17th, 2010 : Miscellaneous
Barack Obama seems to have abandoned another of his supporters’ pet issues – supporting nuclear power plants – by providing loan guarantees for the construction of 2 power plants in Georgia. Obama recognizes:
Make no mistake: whether it is nuclear energy, or solar or wind energy, if we fail to invest in these technologies today, we’ll be importing them tomorrow.
Interestingly though, the NYT almost immediately contradicted him by pointing out (was this an analysis piece or a news story, one wonders!):
But these reactors were designed by Westinghouse, a subsidiary of Toshiba, and many major components will be fabricated abroad. And nuclear power is of limited use in offsetting oil imports.
Although the U.S. is the world’s largest generator of nuclear power, nuclear reactors provide only 20% of electric output. If the U.S. wants to wean itself off coal, petroleum and natural gas in favor of a cleaner source of energy, nuclear power is the best bet.
U.S. Climate Action Partnership: 3 Down, Few More To Go
4:40 pm, February 16th, 2010 : Global Warming, Liberalism

The End is Nigh?
The United States Climate Action Partnership, an organization created to appease climate change fanatics/liberals, is slowly coming apart at the seams.
The WSJ is reporting that BP, ConocoPhilips and Caterpillar have quit the group, because:
USCAP was focused on getting a climate-change bill passed, whereas [the quitters are] increasingly concerned with what the details of such a bill would be.
… USCAP was starting to do more and more on trying to get a bill out without trying to work as much on the substance of it.
USCAP seems to be following the lead of its non-profit members – NRDC, The Nature Conservancy and others – and focusing on the “environmentally effective” and “fair climate change program” agendas of its mission statement rather than the “economically sustainable” part.
Now that Democratic ship is slowly sinking, it is hardly surprising that the rats are deserting it in droves.
Why UC Irvine Will Never Be a Great University
1:25 pm, February 16th, 2010 : Miscellaneous
At a recent speech by Michael Oren, the Israeli ambassador to the U.S., at the University of California at Irvine “raucous protesters” disrupted the ambassador prompting the arrests of 11 students and a whole lot of ill will.
The first issue is the unacceptable behavior of the students. Disrupting anybody’s speech is just plain rude and completely unbecoming of students at a university such as UCI. At a community college, a high school or at any other venue, this kind of behavior could be expected, but not at a so-called top tier university. I have seen orderly protests, which include picketing outside the venue and asking intelligent, pointed questions that get the point across. But, screaming at the speaker during speech? Unacceptable! If this is the kind of students who attend UCI, the institution might as well be called the Community College of California at Irvine.
The second issue is the stupid lecture by the faculty member trying to shame the students into behaving properly. Hey, if they could be shamed at all, they wouldn’t be behaving like this. These protesters are hardly civilized individuals – they can’t be swayed by speeches. A better option would be to quietly walk them out while ignoring the whole matter. But, making those stupid statements over and over again only show the person’s idiocy. This guy hardly deserves tenure.
Thirdly, towards the end (at 5:23 into the video), we can observe a professor telling his students how they should either withdraw from his class or expect to fail their examinations. Excuse me? Behavior outside class, however unacceptable, cannot and should not determine how a student performs in class. The expression of political opinions, again however inappropriate, should never be a metric in examination results. This guy, as above, does not deserve tenure.
Finally, all of the protests, inside or out, were political expressions – free speech protected by the Constitution’s First Amendment. Arresting anybody for shouting slogans is illegal. The arrest of students is even worse, especially when the university administration is involved in the charges. Free speech on the UCI campus is highly restricted as it is. This incident doesn’t do anything to improve the university’s tarnished reputation.
UCI will never be a great university.
Greece: Help Us and Say How Dammit
4:44 pm, February 15th, 2010 : Europe
Greek government financial mismanagement is almost legendary. Even in good times, Greek public debt sits at around 100% of GDP which puts it among the top 10 in the world, putting it behind it such luminaries in the field as Zimbabwe, Italy and Lebanon.
Now that the current government has caused even bigger problems for the nation, bringing it close to defaulting on its debt, it not only wants the EU to bail it out but also to explain how, you know, just in case the Greeks want to approve it before hand.
I suppose here’s another country ready to elect a center-right government.
Another Envoy to the Muslim World?!
3:38 pm, February 15th, 2010 : White House
So, we have Farah Pandith as the special U.S. envoy to Muslim communities. We now have another one – Rashad Hussein who has been appointed as the envoy to the Organization of Islamic Conference. Apparently, he will:
…work to strengthen cooperation between the United States and the Organization of the Islamic Conference, the White House said. In addition, he will seek to counter any disparaging images of the United States in the Muslim world, and in particular will look to correct distortions of Americans disseminated by Al Qaeda.
Pandith’s job description:
she will play a leading role in our efforts to engage Muslims around the world
So, basically, each will be stepping on the other’s toes, just as bureaucracy is designed to do.

Death Row: Death by Natural Causes
1:00 pm, February 15th, 2010 : Miscellaneous
Viva Leroy Nash, a prisoner on death row, has died of natural causes. After spending almost $2.43 million on him at $90,000 per year, taxpayers didn’t even recover a cent of that money by meting out punishment commensurate to his crimes.
The man has been convicted of crimes numerous times, including armed robbery, shooting of a police officer and murder after he had escaped from prison the last time. If anyone deserves to be hanged, it was Nash.
Heck, what’s the point of death row if its worst inmates die of natural causes?
Either hang ‘em or release ‘em into regular prisons. $90,000 per year per death row inmate is too much of an expense on the tax-payers’ dime.
Reid Wants Recess Appointments
5:01 pm, February 10th, 2010 : Democraps, Politics, White House
When Harry Reid & Co. held up dozens of Bush nominees forcing him to recess appoint several of them, including John Bolton, to the UN, liberals were up in arms about Bush’s 171 extra-Senatorial appointments.
Now, that Obama’s nominees are being held back by Republican “obstructionism,” Reid claims:
I mean it’s disgraceful. The Republicans are holding these people up for reasons that have nothing to do with their background, morality [or] competency of these people. … I think, frankly, the President should recess [appoint] all of them. All of them. He has been given very little recognition for the importance of the job that he has trying to find the best people in America to fill this position. No one can say Democrats did this when we were in the minority — we didn’t do this. There were people that were held up, but this something that is beyond the pale.
On video:
Anything that Bush did was Satan’s work. If Obama does the same, it’s the people’s will. Oh, this is why I love Beltway politics.
Let’s Move … the Obamas Out of the White House
4:50 pm, February 10th, 2010 : Health, White House
Michelle Obama has launched a new initiative, Let’s Move, to combat childhood obesity.
She feels that bringing “grocery stores to low-income neighborhoods” and helping “places like convenience stores carry healthier food options,” in addition to more onerous food labeling requirements will provide parents the information and choices they need to make better decisions for their children.
My thoughts on this matter pertain to 2 points. First, let children be children. Let them have fun. They have their entire lives to get back to size 0.
Second, as one commentor put it:
Bring PE back to the classroom. I think dodge ball and tag were great when I was in elementary school. Keep the crazy lawsuits out of sports programs in and out of schools.
PE should be compulsory for ALL kids, no excuses. In my school, PE was a requirement – you had to pass the class to move on each year until the 10th year. It was easy to pass – just attend the class enough times – but the idea was to instill in them a passion for physical exertion.
Alas, the Obamas and Democrats can’t come up with simple solutions. Everything has to be a grand scheme involving more bureaucracy and red tape and more requirements (or taxes) on businesses.
I can’t wait for 2013.
Geithner: Never Say Never
4:26 pm, February 10th, 2010 : Economy
Tim Geither, along with other spendthrifts in Washington, think that Democrats can continue spending like there’s no tomorrow. In a recent interview, he claims:
Absolutely not … That will never happen to this country…
…referring to the possibility of a ratings downgrade given a projected deficit of 1.6 trillion dollars next year. This is in response to:
Moody’s Investors Service Inc. last week said the U.S. government’s bond rating will come under pressure in the future unless additional measures are taken to reduce budget deficits projected for the next decade.
The downgrade won’t happen because of any internal factor but as Stanley Fischer puts it:
I don’t know who else would be the gold standard at this stage
As soon as a replacement is found for the Treasuries, down go their ratings.
Chinese States of America?
We all know about the Chinese buying up American Treasury bonds, and investing in a limited number of large companies, such as Morgan Stanley and Blackstone.
Now, the Chinese government investment funds are buying up minor stakes in several companies including Coke, Apple, Visa, Goodyear and others.
How much longer till the Chinese own us outright, eh?
Gay Marriage Vote Dies in Iowa House
11:55 pm, February 9th, 2010 : Gay Marriage

Iowa: How Much Longer?
Democrats in Iowa have denied Iowans the opportunity to decide whether they actually like gay marriages in their state after it was forced down their throats by liberal activist judges.
Well, it’s only till November.
A Simple Case Against the Tea Party
Any Republican or conservative who wants to dethrone the Democratic Party needs to be worried about the Tea Party Nation, a for profit company which isn’t going to do much more play the spoiler in critical elections across the country, or, worse yet, nominate unelectable conservatives to the GOP ticket.
A recent Rasmussen report shows just this:
| Suppose the Tea Party organized itself as a political party. When thinking about the next election for Congress, would you vote for the Republican candidate from your district, the Democratic candidate from your district or the Tea Party candidate from your district? | |
|---|---|
| Democratic | 36% |
| Tea Party | 17% |
| Republican | 25% |
| Not sure | 23% |
Thus, in a 3-way tussle, the Democrat would win comfortably if we equally divide up the “Not sure” votes.
Let’s look at the first scenario: an independent/third party run by Tea Partiers.
On November 3, 2009, Doug Hoffman, who could be considered the Tea Party candidate, lost to Bill Owens 46-48 with the rest going to Dede Scozzafava, the original Republican nominee. With just one conservative on the ticket, ideally a Republican, we would have won with by a comfortable 54-46.
Even Ron Paul, the so-called Tea Party Father, is threatened by 3 Tea Partiers in the primary this year. He will most likely win the primary and go on to get re-elected, the primary challenge will force him to spend money that would otherwise go to defeat his Democratic challenger.
Third party candidates who come in from the right or the center generally tend to destroy Republican chances of victory. Had Ross Perot not run in 1992, we might not have had Monicagate. Had Dean Berkley not run in 2008 in Minnesota, we would most likely not have Senator Al Franken sitting in Congress today.
As far as the second scenario is concerned, we have seen enough conservative candidates losing seats that would be safely in the red camp. One recent election that comes to mind is the 2008 contest for Maryland’s 1st CD. Moderate Wayne Gilchrist was ousted in the primary by conservative Andy Harris who went on to lose a seat Republicans had held for 18 years. When moderate Republican Jim Kolbe retired in 2006 and replaced by Randy Graff on the GOP ticket, Democrat Gabrielle Giffords won it handily.
Either way, the Tea Party Nation is not going to help unseat Obama’s party. The only thing it might end up doing up is giving an easy victory for the Democrats.
